Be a Principal for a Day at a Jersey City School

Ever wanted to be a principal? Now’s your chance.
The Principal for a Day program is looking for a few more participants who will be paired with a Jersey City public school and spend the morning alongside its principal.
Business and community leaders in particular are invited to serve as temporary principals during the event, which is the collaborative effort of the Board of Education, Hudson County Chamber of Commerce and local developers SILVERMAN. Event organizers say the program aims to help prominent locals see first-hand what challenges face JC educators and students.
“Our hope is that by investing your time in our schools, you will…learn first-hand about the challenges our schools face and help to develop long-term, productive relationships that will support enhanced student achievement,” organizers told JCI last year.
Some of last year’s participants included Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano, Deputy Mayor Raj Mukherji, Ward E Councilman (and now mayoral candidate) Steven Fulop, Maria Maio of the Jersey City Housing Authority, Armando Roman of the Jersey City Fire Department and Sonia Araujo and Priscilla Gardner from the Jersey City Free Public Library.
Local business leaders like Eric and Paul Silverman of SILVERMAN, Thomas John Carlson of the Jersey City Art School, Connie Claman from the Libery Science Center, Liz Long of Bag the Habit, John McCarthy of New Jersey Beer Company, Joseph Scott of the Jersey City Medical Center and Tom Parisi of the Brightside Tavern also participated.
Those chosen will spend the morning shadowing principals as they go about their daily routines, enjoy lunch with that principal at that school and then also join one of two follow-up luncheons for all the Principals for a Day on either June 27 or June 28.
Those interested can find the registration form and more details here. (Note: Forms instruct prospective participants to apply by April 8; that date has been extended so the remaining spots can be filled.) For more information, contact Susan Firth at susan[at]silvermanbuilding.com or 201-714-2339.
Principal for a Day will be held on Thursday, April 18 during regular school hours.
