“Indiegrove Coworking Space Offers Entrepreneurs a Place to Grow”
While fighting for seats and Wi-Fi at local cafes and struggling to get a moment’s peace in your home office, you realize — maybe having a real place to work would be nice.
Now, a new coworking space in Downtown Jersey City hopes to give local small business owners and entrepreneurs a place to sit down, have some coffee and get some real work done.
Indiegrove founder and Hamilton Park resident Zahra Amanpour has long known the value of the coworking space from seeing several in action in New York City where she has worked with small businesses and nonprofits that empower women and minority entrepreneurs. The 33-year-old even says she’s helped coworking spaces in NYC get off the ground and provide services to its members.
“I thought it was an amazing model and a great resources for small businesses and wanted to open my own,” she says. “And then I thought, ‘Jersey City has a huge need and tons of entrepreneurs!’ and that this was the best place for a coworking space.”
She found a 6,000-square-foot space on the fifth floor of 121 Newark Ave., just steps away from the Grove Street PATH Station. The dusty, old space had been unoccupied for about three years and needed a complete facelift before it opened on Jan. 2.
“It needed to be well-lit, warm and inviting. There needed to be a lot of open space that contributes to collaboration and allows entrepreneurs to get to know one another and beyond that, I wanted to give it a sense of community,” she says.
Several have already jumped in to use the space’s 10 rooms — including three larger, open spaces — and its various amenities including a kitchen, Wi-Fi, lockers, mailboxes, copy and fax machines and more. Indiegrove currently has 13 members including a fitness instructor, a writer, a cinematography business, a therapist and two attorneys. “We have a great group from all walks of life and all types of businesses,” says Amanpour.
