The Majestic Theater opened in 1907, and for the next 50 years it would serve Jersey City as a showcase for Vaudeville, music and film, featuring legends such as George Burns and Mae West. Over the years, the building was used as a factory, a warehouse and a church. Before a scheduled renovation could begin in the 1990s, the roof collapsed and the building was purchased and redeveloped by SILVERMAN.
Today you’ll find modern condominiums built on the footprint of the original theater. However, the lobby was saved and restored, and plaster ornamentation, a gabled marquee, mosaic tile and a decorative double-door entrance surrounded by the original iron gates remain. It is truly a treasure, and a daily reminder of the glamorous days of theater in the early part of the 20th Century.
